JewishGen Communities and JewishGen Gazetteer – powered by Ancestry.com. It’s easier to use an external search engine for an initial hit (ex. ‘prypiat’) and then follow the related links provided.

GEDCOM file format. Web site explaining the GEDCOM file format used to exchange data between genealogy tools and sites.

FamilySearch – search engine provided by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Free to create an account. Search Records for a surname such as ‘Goldshol’.

To split or merge Ancestry trees, export the tree/s from Ancestry in GEDCOM format, import the tree/s into Family Tree Maker (FTM), split / merge the tree/s in FTM, export the new tree/s in GEDCOM format from FTM, import the tree/s into Ancestry, and clean up as needed in Ancestry.

Ancestry – Most useful for searching census records and other public documents. Can use Boolean operators in search strings, for example use an asterisk as a wild card.

GEDmatch, owned by QIAGEN, changed their Terms of Service in late 2024 to provide legal cover for their activities (most notably law enforcement and Facebook) generating revenue from users’ uploaded DNA data.
